Contract Negotiations and Final Agreements

PR23.2.1.1.jpg

This part is a key step in publishing a work. Finding a suitable publisher is essential and that is why having a Literary Agency is so important. Bidding and contract negotiations can take a long time, although this process is not documented in the Rose Griffiths Archive. However, there is correspondence concerning various aspects of the contract such as writing schedules. After the contract negotiations, in which the bulk of the negotiations are normally handled by the literary agent, the final figures for royalties and other contractual obligations are nailed down and a memorandum of agreement is signed by all parties.

As can be seen in the Archive through the letters and contracts Rose, just like other authors, had obligations and timeframes that needed to be met in order to successfully publish a book or book series. Listed here are just a sample of some of those letters and contracts that a typical children's non-fiction author would have.
