Concepts and Page Design

PR23.1.52.6 (Resize2).jpg

A sample of an early page layout for 'Maths Through Play'.

After an audience is established, the next step is to conceptualise what the page design might look like (known as 'concept artwork'), which then feeds into the first draft of the book. To complete this the author will need to create activities and problems that will constructively challenge students while remaining appealing to look at and read.

In a lot of Rose's concept artwork, you can see her original drawings which were designed to provide an example of what the illustrated page might look like. Quite a few pages have different cut outs glued onto them as a way to workshop a page and move items around more readily rather than just having the text on the same page. There are also a few objects in the collection that helped inspire Rose in the creation of other book activities.
