Introduction

Magic Maths Cover Image.jpeg

'Magic Maths' Title Page.

At some point in each of our school classes everyone has used some sort of maths textbook. Whether it is a bright one with fun pictures and characters, buying 42 watermelons for some reason, or a timestable book that teachers have you diligently going through again and again till you have them memorized. In some manner we have all used one, but most people probably never wonder how publishing a maths book happens. Through the wonderful Rose Griffiths Archive we can witness the entire process from start to finish through correspondence with editors, various drafts and manuscripts from each stage, and the final publications of the book. This exhibition hopes to help to shed light on the process of writing children’s maths books and help people to understand a little-known process through the material of the Rose Griffiths Archive. Arranged on each page is material from the collection with dialogue on each step of the process. Represented here are a published work of 'Magic Maths' and Rose Griffiths' first manuscript for the 'Puffin Calculator Book'.

As you go through the exhibition feel free to look at the documents and understand what part they played in the process of publishing a book.
