This is a photo from the Leicester Mercury Archive which shows a town hall meeting of members of the Leicester Racial Equality Council. The action group was formed of various officials and included the then Lord Mayor John Mugglestone (centre).
The 6-person action group pictured here was formed to take the lead on issues related to racial injustice at a city and county level. This included forming strategies to tackle housing discrimination, community relations and unemployment.
The 1992 LREC also included the esteemed Leicester academic Surinder Sharma (far left), longtime councillor Sir Michael Day (second left), and academic Iris Lightfoote, now CEO of the Race Equality Centre (third from the right).
