About the Project

This map uses sound to showcase the heritage of Leicestershire and Rutland. It tells the story of the counties by using a mixture of oral histories and natural and ambient sounds to explore some of the important places and events that have defined life here over the years.

This map has been created as part of the British Library’s Unlocking Our Sound Heritage project, which is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and aims to preserve and increase access to the diverse range of sound recordings from archives across the country. More information about the project in general can be found online at the British Library website and updates on the Midlands hub can be found at the Unlocking Our Sound Heritage Midlands Hub website.

We have not been able to cover every village in Leicestershire and Rutland but we hope that you enjoy listening to the sample of sounds we have available. We encourage you to reflect on the sounds that represent your own experiences and we invite you to share these with us to expand our coverage.
