At the beginning of the war, actually, though, the first Leicesters were billeted in our area around Walnut St through to Clarendon street. The first Leicesters were billeted in all the houses round there, and they were the first to go out to France, and I think most of them were wiped out - that group. But my father was then a divisional air raid warden and he gave me responsibility from the age of 10 for the family, because as soon as an air raid he had to go out, and he instilled on me I was the man of the house, at 10. And I had to get the whole of the family with the suitcase, with food and water, into the air raid shelter. And if there was a bombing coming near, I had to strut the walls and all sorts of things. Strut the walls, get timbers and, you know, sort of shore in case anything came down on you. I can remember watching Coventry burn. From the front doorstep. We saw it burning . We stood on our front doorstep, looking over to the West, and the sky was red. Everything was red. That was Coventry burning. Did you have any connection with Americans in the area at all? No, I didn't. The only connection we had was great. Fun to go down if there was a fight. It was usually fights at the Lifeboat Inn, which was in New Bridge St, just between Chestnut St and Walnut Street. It's a more modern pub than the rest, and that's the one the Americans tended to use, and there was always punching, punch ups, there and you'd get down as soon as you could see the Jeeps arrive with the with the police, with their white... White putties and white belts swinging their truncheons against the side of their jeeps, and then they swing them into the fellas and. And of course, the girls like them as well because they, yes, they, they had the money. Yes, the girls did like them, yes. Did people gossip a lot? Oh, yes. Oh yes. A group of us was taken out of the barracks and sent back into Singapore. To River Valley camp. And told we was going to build a railway in Thailand. Taken down to the station and put in steel trucks, 30 people to a truck, the doors were closed and we only stopped for water as we travel through Malaysia to Thailand and Bangkok. There was little air in the trucks at all, so they had to move round to the door to get fresh air, to stop people fainting. People did die on the way up and they was not allowed to be taken off the train. When we arrived at Ban Pong, which were our last railway station, it was monsoon weather and we had to march to the River Kwai from the salt flats on a single path right through the jungle. We slithered and people fell out of line and they were just left there to die. When we arrived at the River Kwai banks, and waded across on a vine which had been stretched across by the natives, our first job was to build the wooden bridge over the River Kwai. And then the steel one. There was no mechanical equipment to do the work. We worked with axes, hand saws, chisels, and bamboo was used for everything. The first thing we was given was an axe and a hammer to build our first house, our own huts for one day. It all got to be done in one day. Food was rice and a little rock salt, and occasionally a few pumpkin seeds was given for food. So we had to improvise. We looked at what the natives used and how they caught things. And I went back to my childhood days at Colton Bassett when we used to catch rabbits and eat those. I was always told that what birds and animals normally drink. Water was quite safe for us to do so as long as we boiled it. We watched the natives catching - how they caught lizards, and we cooked and ate those and snakes. Snakes taste a little bit like chicken. We was up at dawn every morning and roll call was made and my number, my prisoner of war number was 105, which I had to shout out in Japanese. The Japanese said they couldn't understand English. If we were not quick enough to shout the number, the Japanese beat us with the butt of the rifle at the side of the face. At this time, our clothes was not too bad. I still had shorts, a shirt and boots. But these gradually rotted off my feet. And I finished off wearing a short sleeve of my shirt, just like a nappy, which I tied on with a little bit of bark from the bamboo, because string was not available. I had a rice bag for a bed. And there was no such thing as string, paper, pencils, bread, butter, sugar. There was nothing that we take for granted in our only civilised life. We was counted out as we left camp, go to work, with one pint of rice per man was sent to the railhead. The first job was to cut down the jungle one metre wide, and the next party would come along and saw down the redwoods - the big large trees. And everything I could have done with hand tools. The Japanese said no work, no rations. And they also said that if you could not go to work, you was no good to the Imperial Japanese Army. Well, we had a lovely house in in Germany in Stade, near Hamburg. And our job there was arresting Nazis. That's right. And we were stationed in this place, and each morning the officer would give us a job for that day, to go out and arrest Nazis. Well, of course we ditched the motorcycles. You can't arrest people on a motorcycle. So, what used to happen was if we arrested a high ranking Nazi, the first thing we did was to look in his garage. And perhaps he'd have a Merc in there, or a BMW or whatever. And we'd take it, we’d take it, of course. And then we would use it, and then we could, you know. Yeah, we did have a Jeep, which we could take as well and... We would be allocated people to arrest. Now, there was a certain level below which you didn't arrest, and there was a level which and I think the lowest level was [German rank] and we’d arrest above that and all you had to do if you arrested somebody when you took him back and he went into the local police station where we had a fluent German speaking chap, who lived in Cologne with his mum, who was a teacher in Cologne, and he got a property in Cologne. Anyway, he was interrogating them, you see. And we took them back, and then all we have to do, if you gave a German that you'd arrested a piece of paper and say, write down the names of the people that you were responsible to and for, and they would fill it in and they would give you several names then to go on arresting. So this went on for months, of course. Then it came then that it was getting down to the, it was getting down to the tag end of arresting. Can I ask, what did you make of the people you were arresting? What did you think of them? Well, they, they were, they were very, obviously they were, they were soul destroyed. They never put up any - well, I had one chap, he was a young fellow and his mother let me in the door, and he ran out of the back door and out into the garden, away in the fields. And of course all I did was take the pistol and shot it in the air and he stopped dead, you know? And he came back. Yeah. That was the only time. I never heard anybody make any chance to escape. Yeah, but otherwise they were very docile. It's a good job they were because they were sitting behind me in the car, but they they no, no, no. We arrested one very - I didn't arrest him - but we arrested one very high-ranking man and he was at Nuremberg and he was hanged, of course I forgot he was a.. he was a.... what was he now? Armaments. Forgotten his name. But he went. He was at Nuremberg. We arrested him. Yeah, but other other than that, I suppose the majority of them were released and let back again. Yeah, yeah.
