Mr Nicholls: “I’ve often said, there’s too many stops – plenty of them, less than 200 yards apart.”

Interviewer: “What used to happen when you went past a stop?”

(Laughs) “Well people used to in, a lot of cases, you could say it was the conductor’s fault, or the passengers’ fault for sitting on their backside to the last moment. Then tell the conductor ‘I want that stop, stop please’. And if they missed it, they used to come up to the front of the tram and say ‘I’m going to report you for not stopping’. I’m told quite a few of them used to say ‘I’m in a hurry’ and then I’d say ‘You can’t be in a hurry or you wouldn’t stand here, choppsing to me’. And then I used to get a rap on the knuckle for being cheeky to passengers, and be told ‘passengers are your bread and butter’ (chuckles) Well... you can’t be wrong, all the time.”
