<text>I remember them dropping the second atom bomb. Because I remember saying the Yanks must be up there shovelling them out tonight as the shock waves went through the ground, we just bounced up and down. Just like a shuttlecock. The next morning, the Japanese told us the war was over, as the Americans had poisoned the air. And it was ten days before they found us. Who had locked the guards up and took their rifles from them. And we guarded ourselves. It was really silly because there was about 16 to 20,000 population nearby. Ten days after the ward finished we had our first air drop. It was from the Americans and they came with 20 gallons steel drums containing uniforms, food, chewing gum and there was 20 times more clothes than what we needed. Was told to go down to the station and boarded the train to Sendai and was met by the Navy and our own Marines, and they took us down by destroyer to Japan for a hundred mile journey, and was put on trains, taken through Nagasaki and down to Tokyo. We were told to strip off everything, leave all our clothes onto the sand, and was taken into an hospital ship and disinfected by DDT and all our hair cut off, things like that, to make sure there's no disease going onto the ship. They run a geiger counter up and down for radiation. I was given a call to fill in and asked how we wanted to travel home. I looked at the card, saying did we want to travel by land, sea or air or what, by Australia, America. It seemed to be like a joke after what we've gone through, so I just ticked all the little boxes. And said I would go by Canada. And by land, sea and air. </text>

<text>I have to laugh about it ‘cause with me Mum, see, it was she was like a sister. It was really good. I mean to go out with these fellas - and I got loads of chaps to go with because I was attractive and I liked going out with them - but I went out on trust with me mum. Me mum said, well, you can do what - you can go with them, you can have a kiss and a cuddle, but, she said please, you've got the hairdressing saloon and she said please don't let me down, she said, you know what I mean? Well, I got into no end of trouble with the chaps because they'd say, they'd bring me to the door and start on different things, I said well, it's no good. I said there's nothing doing. I said I've made a bond with me, mother, and that's it, and they used to get really mad - your bloody mother! You and your bloody mother, get home to your mother, you know. And this is how he went on. But I never did. I thought no, I shan’t let her down, I'm not going to let her down. And I used to say to her, well, I went out with this feller so he said, well, he was a nice boy. She said, you only went out with Steve for a fortnight, she said, why did you pack him up? He was lovely. I said, oh, I couldn't go with him anymore. I said, his hands started to wander and everything. So I just, I couldn't stand the strain. But that's how we were. I mean, we didn't know flipping nothing. So, they were so different then. But you see, things did change cause the war came on. And then the Americans come and you wasn't allowed to go out with any Americans. That was the last thing you could do. They was too much, what we called hot stuff. You see? Oh, I've seen your Pearl out with American. You know, there would be hell to pay. I didn't want to fall in the family way and then me dad, he'd tell me, said, well, look, you know what you doing? He said, there's VD. He said. And even Jeff told me about that, later on about it. He said they put us off in the Air Force. He told us how what had happened to them - all come in spots and we'd be in a terrible state if we got VD. And my dad used to say to me that, my mum used to say about having a baby, Dad would say, well, you'll have to go to that clinic if you get VD and people will see you coming in and out that clinic, they'll know what you've gone in there for. And it's terribly painful when you have to hot needles in you if you go there, get that. So you can imagine I, kept my distance, what with VD. And then I wanted to go to London and go down. So, you have to be careful when you go down Soho, my dad said, he said they take you girls away at your age, you'll be white slave trade. So that's what we got. </text>

<text>There was a written menu chalked on a black board on the wall, saying what we've got to eat, you see. So you asked for what you thought it was. Well, it never was. I mean, if it's a lamb, ooh, your guess was as good as mine. We never did know what some of the objects were, except when it was whale meat. Now I had had whale meat before. Very nice, but it tastes fishy. Ever so fishy. Like very heavy steak, only fishy. And I didn't like whale meat. But anyway that well, meat.

How did people feel that, you know, at the time about the fact they couldn't have the same food as they were used to and they were? No, they were didn't. The rations are very small?

Very small, my dear, they were miniscule. Well, everybody knew – you see, we’d got at that time, we got this fabulous man, Churchill. Now he would tell us straight, it's going to be very difficult, Hitler’s sinking 40 ships a month, we haven't got the food, so we've got to make do. Everybody must dig up the lawns and everybody must put some food in, which we did. There wasn't any lawns anywhere because everybody put some grub in, you see? Nobody ever grumbled because everybody knew that it was a joint effort. This was not just soldiers fighting soldiers. It was everybody in this country fighting one man. So, when this Haw-Haw (‘Lord’ Haw-Haw), that, that Irishman that used to come every morning and give you a blurb, when he started in the morning, we were all at work. Everybody used to roll with laughing. Say, oh, good gracious, listen to him. Glad that he sunk it again, he’s sunk The Hood about five times already, you see, or something like that. And it, do you know, the general feeling was to make fun of them. Nobody took it seriously. Everybody took that sort of thing as a, well, he's wasting his time, you know, we don't want to bother with him, you see, he's... it's just one of those things. </text>
