You went on the dole for 18 shillings a week and it lasted 6 weeks. And then, if after that, if you couldn't get work, especially the older people, they put them on a means test and that was for another few weeks. And in that time they told you to sell your furniture. And a lady I know, she was, when she was a grandmother, they told her to sell her sideboard and she had to. And I know someone, he was very, very musical and he loved his piano, and he hadn't got work, and they told him to sell his piano, but his son walked in the room and threw this chap out, so he did keep his piano. But that was the way it was in those days.
Now I left school in 1931. I was 18. I signed on at the unemployment exchange, as it was known then, but I did not receive any employment pay. And for three months, I had no job, no dole, and no future.
There was hundreds of us thrown on to the dole just like that, and there was already a terrific amount on the dole and, well, to go through that that time it was a terrifying experience really, because when you used to go and you had to sign on about twice or three times a week. And you, you had to stand in terrific long queues and you could see men in there, really well dressed and well educated, and it was a horrible experience.

Northampton was known as the great centre for boot and shoe making, that was their industry. Now, when that collapsed, well, there was stagnation. But Leicester had such a variety. We had engineering works, we had boot and shoe, worked all sorts of things, which gave us an advantage that if there was a slump in this, perhaps there was a bit of a boom in this. And we did have an advantage in the worst days of the depression, because we were, had such a variety of industries and I think Leicester at that time was in a fortunate position compared to many.
Unemployment was mounting and men were on the pittance from the Ministry of Labour and from the Relief Committee. They formed a unemployed workers movement and almost every morning meetings were held, and were big crowds, and many of the men, of course, had come out the forces. Things were getting a bit nasty, and of course, it happened throughout the country. People can stand so much - we've been promised homes for heroes. The unemployed were getting at rock bottom. The authority was afraid the unemployed would break into the Guardians offices. As the crowd of unemployed were protesting outside, possibly to see if they could get more money, suddenly, the police who were packed inside burst out with the batons, which the unemployed hadn't expected.

If anyone was working, the employers deducted money for stamps, one for unemployment and the other for National Health insurance. The latter meant that the individual was entitled to the services of a General Practitioner and the medicines without charge. This meant, however, that taking, for instance, a man with two or three children, his wife was not covered by this, nor his children, and so if he wanted to obtain General Practitioner cover without having to pay on each individual item, he joined the doctor's club for his wife and children, or a Provident dispensary. There are a number of organisations about where, for a contribution of something like 5 pence a week, the subscriber’s entitled to the service of the General Practitioner and also to medicines. Quite a number of people couldn't even afford to belong to a doctor's club because the - although we hear about how cheap things were at that time, it was still very expensive to live on one's very poor salary.

You had violence, but it was a different type. Your drunk ... drink was the biggest factor there, and more open, there was no, no knife business, anything like that at all in those days. That seemed to come with the early part of the war.
We had a lot of very poor areas in Leicester. We also quite a bit of violence, not to the same extent as it is today, but policemen worked the beats on a Friday and Saturday night. You could guarantee a punch up every Friday and Saturday night, helmets flying and fists flying.
There was certainly no muggings or anything of that description. People, of course, walked about in perfect safety and at any time of the day or night. In fact, they did have a much greater respect for law and order then.
The comradeship in the police force in those days was really tip top, absolutely great. It's so very, very different from later years because we went out and say on night duty, at 10:00 at night, and at 2:00 in the morning, you had your tea brought to you, if you were on the early outside, and you sat in somebody's doorway and had your snack, had 1/2 an hour off, then you got up and got on again. And sometimes you win the whole night through with that, speaking to either one or two or three of your own colleagues or your inspectors and sergeants when they came.
And in spite of all their problems today, the detection rate is quite good, because they're faced with far greater problems than we were. Today the police forces is very specialised, they've got so many different departments. We didn't have that in my early days. We pretty well dealt with the lot – drugs, vice, what, you name it.
