In hotels, of course, they had various types of things. I was involved with my friend Maurice there in the Grand Hotel at that time. And their refrigeration machinery was at that time, I think I'm right in saying, was only driven by ammonia and whacking great compressors with a flywheel about so big, you know, going clonk, clonk, clonk, clonk. And in my time, it was fetching those out and putting in much smaller and much more efficient. Is this with the Freon? Yes. Did the ammonia one smell? Oh yes, yes, if you had a leak or anything like that. But it was never called ammonia, it was always called ‘armonia’. Don't ask me why, because I mean it's A double M, whatever it is. But somebody would ring up and say, there's some ‘armonia’ floating around our house, it must have a leak. And not only was there ammonia largely used at that time, but sulphur dioxide. And sulphur dioxide was putrid stuff. And if you really got caught in it without a respirator, after a very few minutes you'd just feel as though somebody was tightening your chest up and you just had to go out and get some fresh air in your lungs. And there were a nucleus of electricians of which, maybe came to Wathes to help out when we were busy. If they saw or smelt sulphur dioxide, they just used to run. And if you happened to be with them at that time, you were the one who was saddled with it. Would you carry a respirator with you as part of your kit? Well, no. We had at that time, I think there was three or four respirators in the stores. And if shall we say, one of the fridge boys had got the effort, you know, they'd say, Matt, you're coming with me. You see, Mr Wathes said, take Matt with you. And Matt would go with him and get a respirator, get this, get that, get something else, and off we would go to wherever the leak was. And you could clear, with sulphur dioxide, if you had a good leak, you could clear a place like Ratby. You could clear part of Ratby in a very short space of time. It was beastly stuff. But nevertheless, as a fridge engineer, at a later date, it made you do your work correctly, you know, to stop gulping sulphur dioxide down. And the same applied with ammonia. But ammonia was, the respirator wasn't really a safeguard. It was a safeguard for a short time, but then your canister had to be changed and all that sort of thing. If a customer, you know, sort of said, I would like to see somebody because I want two or three switch plugs putting in, it would almost immediately recognise, ah, yes, now that could either be 200 volts or it could be 100 volts DC. And the centre, the centre of Leicester, if you say round about High Street down to the clock tower and so forth, most of that was on 100 Volt DC. You know the people you were doing work for, was it generally middle class or upper class, or was there much sort of working class households that you went into? Mostly working class house, no I think that's wrong - not mostly, but a large proportion of it was, for the lower class people, who sort of said, well, everybody's getting electricity, we must do it. And then other companies, not only worthies, used to do something like that for one pound, one pound a point. A pound a point, sorry? A pound a point, one light. One light and a switch, one pound. And then the electricity people started the issue of hiring out electric cookers. And you hired those, you know, for so much a week from there. Well, they had got to be wired up from the main incoming cable. to wherever the kitchen was to do it, and that used to be something because in those days most electric cupboards were in the front room of the house and of course the kitchen being at the back you got a long way to go from there and you were going under floors and through walls and goodness knows what, always hoping that the cable was in fair shape when you got the other end. Yes, that was quite something. But with the upper classes, we'll still stick to the Stoneygate types, not only did they want them doing, but they wanted them doing cheaper than anybody else. And you had to, you know, you can't go there electrician, you know, so and so goes there, so you can't go in there, you'll have to find another way round, and dictating what you actually did. But it was quite a thing, it was quite a thing and of course it took you out of your working class environs, you know, into many different spheres really. At that time, I think most of the working class people, they hired, they hired the appliance. You had to pay for your own electrics to be put in for it, but once that was done, you know, you paid, I don't know how much, but I know they were Revo cookers and three plates on the top and a fair-sized oven on them, and they were vitreous enamel all through, so they were quite a good effort to hire from the electric company. Was it seen as something really special or was it just that everyone was having one? No, I think generally speaking people accepted it as the way things were going. It was created as part of a research commission from Leicestershire County Council's Heritage Lottery Funded <a href="http://www.centuryofstories.org.uk/" title="Century of Stories project">Century of Stories project</a>. <br /><br />The focus of this research was the very first donations received by the College committee, which enabled the first small group of students to commence their studies in October 1921. Therefore, only individuals and organisations who made financial or significant in kind contributions before July 1922 are included in the data. <br /><br />The starting point of the database was the list of donors recorded in the College's first annual report for 1921/22, which can be viewed on the University Library's <a href="http://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/cdm/singleitem/collection/p16445coll13/id/903" title="Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland College Report and Accounts 1921/22">Special Collections Online</a>. In order to understand who the first donors were, their occupations, where they lived, and how they were connected to one another, this initial data has been supplemented with information extracted from a range of other sources. These include census returns, trade directories, and records of organisations such as the Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society, Leicestershire Archaeological Society, and Belmont House Society. It is not intended that the data presented provides a full record of the lives of the individuals included, and any additional information would be welcomed. <br /><br />Where date ranges are provided for associations with local organisations and societies, these reflect the first and last reference to an individual in the records consulted. I was at home. Then I went to work, and then technical school during the 19... in the ‘50, in the ‘49. Then I had to go in the army, you see. February ‘51, I was a soldier. People who were older than me, they came home on leave, they'd got a uniform on, ‘How you've been going?’, all that. And you said, not too bad and all this. And where'd you go and where you posted to, you see. Of course, in the army you knew, you knew you were going overseas. And, of course, the one thing you didn't want was to go to Korea. You didn't want any of that, whether you liked it or not. And, of course, the Leicestershire Regiment did go to Korea. How did you feel about that? Well, I was apprehensive obviously. I didn't want to go but... I didn't want to go because it was tearing away from my roots wasn't it? And I didn't want to go. But I went, and I was passed, and this and the other. How did it work? Would you have gone with other Leicester lads or were you all split up? No, you all, it was a call up. Those in the age group would go to the varying offices. I think I went up Clarendon Park Road somewhere, and you was given the medical, and then you'd say, well, you'll wait for your call up papers. You did not know where you were going then. Then you get your call up papers to be at Leicester Station, here's your warrant and the train goes at so and so. My dad went with me actually and two guys who played cricket with me at Corah's. And they came to wish me goodbye, you know. It was a bit... I kissed my mother goodbye. I think it’d upset her. But anyway, some people, it upset them greatly. But the thought of desertion, what the punishment would be, was... Anyway, I went and I went to Germany and I enjoyed it to a certain extent and did a few things that me... I think me hormones cracked in well there and I did a few more things. I was a nuisance and did this, that and the other. I was a corporal. I received a stripe for being in the military police and while I was in the MP they sold more petrol to the natives than anybody else, I think. If you did everything you was told to do and didn't answer back, or do anything wrong, you was all right. You had to conform. But, what happened after about a certain period of time, you realised that it was all a load of cobblers. And you knew exactly what to do, what not to do, and where to do it, and what not to do. And you'd get away, you know. I mean, it is the biggest scive out, there's no question about that, the army. I mean, you're frightened when you go in, you're frightened. But then after a while, you realise, oh well, sod him, I can do something like this, and you know. I mean, my natural instinct was to obey everything, and then I realised that, well, he's a thicko, I'm going to take advantage of him. Which I did, you know, I mean, I was, I made money, I did in the army. Now, I'm glad I went in - at the time I went in, I didn't want to go in. But I did meet people, I did see Germany, I did, and I had some good times, some bad times. Was the spectre of Korea hanging over you? Oh yes, I just, yes, because when you went out. When you passed out of your initial training, which took 18 weeks in my case, right, so-and-so goes there, so-and-so goes there, and of course you would, when the Korean business came up, I just, I missed it anyway.
