When I left school I went into Denman’s shoe factory, big place in Oadby, in the warehouse, you know, packing shoes up and… I didn’t like it at all. Well, Dad worked as a groom then for this Mrs Humes, in Oadby, and I thought, I wouldn’t mind a job like that, you know. So I said to Dad, I said, do you want a groom or anything Dad, and he said well I’ll ask her, Mrs Humes, if she wants one, well she did, and of course I went there. How many horses did she got?... five in the stables, and got two Shetland ponies in the field, you know, for kids to ride on, and some more horses in a field. And of course you had to get them ready for people who went hunting, like Worthingtons who came up. They’d got their own horses at livery there. And, you know, when they came back, mind you, they’d be filthy, you’d have to clean them all, you know, make them all nice again, get all the dirt off. It was a really super job though. Course you cleaned all the tack, polished everything up, it was a nice job that.

Oh yes it’s well known for the hosiery in Wigston…when I went to work at Holmes’… you had to start at 8 o’clock, half past twelve it was dinner time and then we worked until 6 o’clock at night… when I first started I shall always remember my mum sent me to work in my gym tunic and my black stockings from school and I got to work and there was me in this gym tunic, my black stockings and my school shoes and they’d all got their frocks on and I felt really, you know, really out of it…anyway, ever so nice the foreman and he took me round and told me who all the people were like and what I’d be doing. He says ‘you’ll be doing this for the first six months then when you’re not doing the errands’, he says, ‘we’ll give you a bit of splicing to do.’ They used to make ladies’ stockings with Cuban heels, not tights or stockings and the Cuban heels had like pieces of nylon thread going across and you had to cut this thread as near to the seam on the Cuban heel as possible without cutting the stocking. That’s what you did in between fetching, doing errands and fetching cottons and things. You had to do that for six months. ‘After six months’, he said, ‘we ask you what machine you’d like to go on’ and he took me round and showed me the machines. There was toe stitching, overlocking, welting, seaming and linking, you see and then ‘after you’ve been there a bit’ he said, ‘we’ll ask you which machine you’d like to learn.’

Mr McClelland: Well, Wigston was, it was a suburb of Leicester, but obviously it was a place where people would come out to the end of the terminus shall we say? Go for a walk along the country road between Wigston and Oadby. It was a rural area, there were no major store in the town, or the village as it was then, these came later. With the result that there was village schools as opposed to the larger schools that we have now. My children sort of grew up in a village atmosphere. Progress is such that one has got to accept that it is now just a suburb of Leicester.
Interviewer: When you came to Wigston then, did you feel that you were moving into a community in the same way as you’d moved from a community in Northern Ireland?
Mr McClelland: Yes, pretty much so, because the road that, the house that I moved into, Drury were building these houses and hence there were all new families moving into this road, and hence everybody sort of got to know one another because we were chasing builders and making sure that everything was right, so it was quite a community then. Unfortunately, as time moves on, the road that I live in now, I know about half a dozen people out of a large road, there’s not the same community spirit.
Interviewer: What do you think makes a community?
Mr McClelland: Neighbourliness. Where one can rely on one’s neighbours to have a talk, to have a chat, to discover if there’s anything that one can do in the way of assisting each other in times of trouble, or problems with children, or anything of that nature.

Mrs Sykes: And that was the Church of Christ Baptist church, or chapels then, in Canal Street, South Wigston. Well, everyone in my, well all my friends had to go to a place of worship, albeit what it was.
Interviewer: Did it make any difference to your friendships as to which church they went to?
Mrs Sykes: Oh yes. On Sunday my mother would say to us as young children, say seven onwards, don’t talk to that so-and-so, she goes to the Methodists. You weren’t allowed to talk on Sunday outside to anybody that didn’t go to your church. Your church was the church. But it was more or less like a class distinction. The Baptists stood by the Baptists, and each chapel, there was the Congregational, the Methodist, the Weslyan, St Thomas’ Church of England, and then right away over the village - it was a village albeit it was a very big one and an advanced one – was the Roman Catholic church of which of course we knew absolutely and utterly nothing. I myself, at 16 years old automatically went to the bible class, and from the bible class we automatically became Sunday School teachers. That was quite a recognised thing. And we feared God; we had a real, we had a real respect for everything I think in those days.

I was managing this reserve here at Rutland Water as a wetland reserve for probably three years before I saw even any water entering the western end of it, and they were still completing the dam. So what I did in those early years was very much building up what is now a very successful volunteer base…probably planted maybe 80,000 trees or so in those first couple of years- a lot by myself. Virtually everything you can see apart from on the hill would have been planted in those first three years. There was very much designing how it was all going to look, where all the trails were going to be…One of the problems, and there are still some people, I think, all these years later, that think I work for the water company…but I act as a consultant, or the Trust does, and we get paid by Anglian Water for our work that we do here. One of the things they provide us with, or did in those days, was a Land Rover and of course on the side of it is ‘[] River Division’ as it was in those early days, so you could almost feel the sort of dagger being thrust between your shoulder blades as you drove past. I mean you could understand it, I mean it was a major impact on, particularly the farmers…there was all this land being flooded for Tim Appleton’s ‘dickie birds’…spent a lot of time trying to convince people that what we’d be doing here would in fact eventually be of benefit to the communities for all sorts of reasons, just a nicer experience to see wildlife and birds flying around but also have financial benefits and of course that has been very much the case.

Do you remember any Americans in the area as well?
They were posted on the… I think they had tents on the race course, and certainly at Shady Lane. But they used what is now the old swimming pool, it isn’t used, they boarded the floor over, you know, filled the pool in with boards, and I think that was their mess hall, and we used to have a village hall and they used to go there, and of course we’d got a cinema and they used to go in the cinema. We used to speak to them, I remember one used to give all the children, the little boys and girls, a ride round the village in his jeep…I don’t think they were here that long really, came somewhere from Italy to settle down, to go back on D-Day…Course we had the German prisoners here…a lot of them were very young, I mean some of them weren’t much older than us 15 year old children, you know. The same with the Americans, some of those were very young. I remember the one who worked on Oadby Lodge because the people there were friends of ours, my mother used to go up there a lot…and they used to spend a lot of their time cutting out, made marvellous tin toys out of a sardine tin, or a treacle tin. I’ve got a ship in a bottle that one made, gave to the family I suppose, but I’ve kept it. And they made wooden toys. I remember when they first came they camped on Shady Lane, because the Americans built the billets on Shady Lane, then they went and they started bringing the German prisoners over, and it was a regular Sunday evening walk to walk from Oadby to Shady Lane. I don’t know what I expected to see, you couldn’t see much anyway, but I can always remember their singing…it was really lovely.
