The Library received 250 books and pamphlets on the subject of transport history, together with a small amount of manuscript and other miscellaneous material. It is concerned mainly with the history of railways.
The Transport History Collection was established and grew rapidly. By September 1955, the collection contained more than 4000 items.
The Transport History Collection at the University now includes:
- Books
- Journals
- Company timetables
- ephemera on the history of transport especially on the history of Britain's railways
Most items are on the 3rd floor of the David Wilson Library.
Jack Simmons
1915-2000
Became Professor of History at University College Leicester in 1947. Apart from running his own department, Simmons also concerned himself with the College library and with the Senate Publications Board, precursor of Leicester University Press.
He had a distinguished career as a teacher and retired from Leicester in 1975. Simmons was also a writer and an active member of the local community.
